Identifying Droppings in Your Attic, Garage, or Soffit
Droppings are the most reliable evidence in an attic, because each animal leaves a different size, shape, and pattern. Do not sweep or vacuum them dry — that puts the contamination into the air you breathe.

Most common findDark pellets about a half-inch long with pointed ends, scattered along walls, on top of insulation, and in pantry corners. Dozens to hundreds of them.

Rodents leave droppings everywhere they travel, so you find them trailed along beams and wall lines. Raccoons use a single latrine and return to it. Bats drop straight down, so the guano forms a pile under the roost or outside beneath the gap they use. Squirrel droppings concentrate around nesting material. That pattern tells us where the animal is living and where it gets in.
Real health risks in the dust
Rat and mouse urine and droppings carry leptospirosis and salmonella; raccoon feces can carry roundworm eggs that stay viable for years; bat guano supports histoplasmosis spores. Dry sweeping aerosolizes all of it. Contaminated insulation should be removed and the space sanitized rather than cleaned up dry with a shop vac.
What we do about it
After the animals are out and the structure is sealed, we remove soiled insulation, treat and deodorize the affected area, and can install fresh insulation to restore your attic's R-value. Cleanup without exclusion just means doing it again next season.
Common questions
Are old droppings still a problem if the animal is gone?
Yes. Roundworm eggs and histoplasmosis spores persist in dry material long after the animal leaves, and the odor keeps attracting new animals to the same entry point.
Can you tell how long they've been there?
Fresh droppings are dark and soft; old ones are gray, dusty, and crumble. On the inspection we use that plus rub marks and nest condition to judge how established the infestation is.
Do you handle the cleanup, or just the animal?
Both. Removal, structural sealing, contaminated insulation removal, sanitizing, and deodorizing are all part of the job.
