Squirrels are the only common Florida attic animal that runs around while you're awake. If you hear activity at 6:30 in the morning, quiet through midday, and another burst in the late afternoon, squirrels are the leading suspect. Rats and raccoons go quiet in daylight.
Weight tells you rodent versus raccoon
If the sound moves your ceiling or you can point at exactly where a footstep landed, you are hearing something that weighs ten pounds or more — a raccoon, or occasionally an opossum. Rats and squirrels are light and quick; they sound like something rolling a marble or sprinting across plywood.
Why identification matters before anyone sets a trap
Each animal enters differently and is sealed out differently. Rats need every gap under a quarter-inch closed across the whole structure. Squirrels chew, so repairs have to be steel-backed. Raccoons need entry points strong enough to resist a determined pull, and any litter has to be hand-removed before sealing. Bats are protected in Florida and can only be excluded with one-way devices outside maternity season. Guess wrong and you either seal an animal in or it reopens the hole.

Can I tell what it is without going in the attic?
Usually yes. Time of day, the weight of the sound, and whether you hear gnawing narrow it to one or two animals. We confirm it on the inspection with entry points, droppings, and rub marks.
Should I go up and look myself?
We don't recommend it. Attic droppings, urine, and airborne dust can carry roundworm, leptospirosis, and histoplasmosis, and a cornered raccoon in a tight space is dangerous.
